Team mom takes players under her wing
MADISON, Wis. -- For sixth-year senior Kendall Shaw, she has found her home and family at Wisconsin. No wonder as the 6-foot, 4-inch post is the "mom" on the Badger team. Shaw has played in 47 games, starting 14, in the Cardinal and White after transferring from Vanderbilt. She is averaging a season-best 4.0 points per game this season while adding 2.8 rebounds per game.
Shaw will graduate in May with her master's degree in athletic administration and leadership.
The players call you the mother on the team. What do you do that gave you that title?
"When I first transferred in, I took them under my wing because even though I was new to Wisconsin I had been through college athletics for four years. Coach Tsipis always jokes about our first meeting and I sat behind all the now-sophomores like a mom and looked over them. I just try to help and be there for all my teammates, which leads them to calling me mom."
You like giraffes. How many do you have? Do you have a favorite one?
"I have tons of giraffes. My teammates and friends say I need to stop buying giraffe stuff because I have almost everything. Just to name a few I have two paintings, three to four little figures, three to four stuffed animals, and giraffe print brush and blanket. My favorite one would probably be one of the stuffed animals."
What has been a highlight of your Badger career?
"There have been multiple highlights during my Badger career. One would be last year when we beat Green Bay at Green Bay or when we got our Big Ten Tournament win. This year a highlight would be receiving my sixth year so I could continue to play with the team and our trip to Washington,D.C.
You will be graduating this May with your master's degree. What do you want to do with it?
"My master's degree is in athletic administration and leadership. With this degree, I am hoping to stay in the athletic world so possibly coaching or community relations for a sports team. I am also thinking about getting my teaching certificate. I have multiple things in mind so I just need to figure out which one I would like to do."
Are you going to take a break and travel before you start working?
"My mom and dad told me I needed to get a job but I actually convinced them to let me take a break and travel some over the summer. I am actually doing a two-week vacation over in Italy with my mom and brother. Although if the right job comes around I will cut my summer short and start working."
