Sophomore swept distance events at conference meet
MADISON, Wis. – For the second-straight year, the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Indoor Championship is a Badger as Wisconsin men's track and field standout Ollie Hoare was named this year's winner, the conference announced Tuesday.
Hoare won both the 3000 and 5000 meters at the 2018 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships, scoring 20 points for the Cardinal and White.
"There were a lot of amazing performances this past weekend at Big Tens," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "There are no easy points at this meet. To be named athlete of the championships is a tremendous honor as it shows the respect coaches in our conference have for his 3K/5K double."
Hoare began his weekend with a win in the 3000 meters thanks to a time of 8 minutes, 11.07 seconds as he broke away from the field in the final 300 meters.
A day later in the 5000 meters, Hoare again used a late surge to claim his second conference title of the weekend, crossing the line in 14:07.50.
A native of Sydney, Australia, he is no stranger to conference hardware as he was the Big Ten cross country champion last fall.
Hoare is following in the steps of junior Morgan McDonald, who received the honor last year after completing the same 3K/5K sweep at Big Tens.
Hoare wasn't the only Badger to receive an honor from the conference on Tuesday as Zach Lorbeck and Banke Oginni were named Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honorees.Â
Next up for Hoare and the Badgers is the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 9-10, in College Station, Texas.
