MADISON, Wis. — Presley Norby has had a memorable and impactful sophomore season with the Wisconsin women's hockey team. A left winger from Minnetonka, Minnesota, she's second on the team with 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) and the Badgers are 10-0 when she scores a goal this season. Norby also shares the team lead in game-winning conversions with four, the biggest coming March 10 at LaBahn Arena when her first-period goal set the stage for a 4-0 NCAA quarterfinal victory over Minnesota. The decision qualified UW for its fifth consecutive Frozen Four, which will be staged Friday and Sunday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. Before heading back home with a chance to win a NCAA title, Norby took a moment to identify her favorite hockey keepsake, the best all-around athlete on the team and what she would do if given a chance to be coach of the Badgers for a day.
What's the best part of your bus rides to places like Minneapolis?
"I usually do a little bit of studying, but at some point in every one of our bus rides we turn up a speaker and do a little sing-along to country music or pump-up music. I like those moments shared with teammates and music and just kind of hanging out."
Who's the best singer on the team?
"Maddie Posick for sure. She's the best. Hands down."
What's the best advice you've ever received?
"Work hard and be a good teammate."
You're only a sophomore so you're not very deep into your college career, but is there a class you'd recommend?
"I really liked psychology. I felt it was really relatable and interesting and you can tie it into sports. I'm pre-business right now, so it's not really related to that, but I definitely thought it was interesting."
Do you have a favorite hockey keepsake?
"Something that's really cool is that I've always been — I'm a pretty little girl — is my parents still have my first skates and my first stick. Seeing how tiny those are; I can't believe I was able to stand up at that point. It's cool to look back at how long I've been playing."
Who's the best all-around athlete on this team?
"I'd probably have to say Abby Roque. We do soccer before the games and she's good at that. She's good at spike ball. She's good at football. She's pretty good at all the ball sports. She's good at golf, too. She's got all those fields covered, so she's pretty good."
You have superstitious teammates. Are you?
"Not at all."
You can be coach of the Badgers, replace Mark Johnson, for a day. What would be your agenda?
"I don't think I would change a thing. We're all super competitive and we like to play games like 3-on-3 at the end of practice. Those things are definitely the things coach incorporates into our practices and those are definitely the most fun things."
