NORMAL, Ill. – For the first time since 2009, a Wisconsin men's golfer finished a tournament atop the leaderboard. Battling tough conditions all weekend, including snow during the latter stages of Sunday's final round, freshman Griffin Barela earned co-medalist honors at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.
Barela was the lone golfer in the field to shoot in the 60s during either of Saturday's two rounds and headed into Sunday with a two-shot lead. He finished the final round with a 3-over par 74, giving him a three-round total of 217 (+4). That earned him a share of first place with a pair of Duke golfers, Chandler Eaton and Adam Wood.
The last UW golfer to earn medalist honors was Dan Woltman, who earned a share of first place at the 2009 Boilermaker Invitational.
Led by Barela and two other top-15 finishers, the Badgers placed second as a team, behind only 25th-ranked Duke. Junior Jordan Hahn's 68 in the Sunday's final round was the best round by any golfer during the tournament and propelled him into a tie for seventh place. Sophomore Pete Kuhl carded a 1-under par 70 in the final round and earned a share of 11th place.
