MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's golf team has advanced to postseason play for the fifth time in the last six seasons. This year, the Badgers are hoping that the home course advantage leads to UW advancing to the NCAA championships for the third time in school history.
UW is seeded ninth out of the 18 teams playing in Madison. Play is scheduled to begin in the 54-hole tournament on Monday at 8 a.m. Admission is free. For complete information, including a complete list of teams, live scoring links and more, visit the NCAA Madison Regional home page.
Here are five things to know before action tees off at University Ridge Golf Course on Monday:
1. Wisconsin's season scoring average of 292.3 is almost four strokes better than the school record of 296.2 set last season. In fact, the top five scoring averages have come in each of the last five seasons. Seniors Gabby Curtis (73.1) and Lexi Harkins (73.17) are currently ranked second and third, respectively, on UW's single-season scoring average list.
2. The Badgers starting five of Curtis, Harkins, fellow seniors Aya Johnson and Becky Klongland, along with junior Jessica Reinecke, has been the same for every match this season. Those five have combined to play in eight NCAA regional tournaments. Johnson is the only player without regional experience.
3. Overall Wisconsin is making its ninth NCAA Regional appearance and sixth in the last eight years. The Badgers have twice advanced from the regional to the NCAA championships, in 2003 and 2013.
4. University Ridge Golf Course, the site of the NCAA Madison Regional, is UW's home course. The Badgers hosted the East-West Match Play Challenge at URidge in September and placed second in the eight-team event. Among the teams in that field were NCAA participants Iowa State, Ohio State, Oregon and Oregon State.
5. Thoughts from head coach Todd Oehrlein:
"We're really excited to be a part of the regional and hosting it at University Ridge. I'm extremely proud of this team and how much they have achieved this year. They've been a joy to coach.
"We need to be patient this week and take advantage of the opportunities we create. If we are able to do that I think we have a good chance to be right in the mix."
