Pankowski, Shaver will co-captain UW this year while Clark and Rolfes will serve as alternate captains
MADISON, Wis. – Senior Wisconsin women's hockey players Annie Pankowski and Sophia Shaver will serve as co-captains for the Badgers during the 2018-19 season, head coach Mark Johnson announced Wednesday.
Pankowski, a Laguna Hills, California, native, and Shaver, a Wayzata, Minnesota, native, will be assisted by fellow seniors Emily Clark and Maddie Rolfes.
It marks the second-straight year UW will have co-captains and only the third time in 20 years that the Badgers will have multiple captains. Claudia Kepler and Baylee Wellhausen co-captained UW to its fifth-straight NCAA Frozen Four last season while Michelle Sikich and current UW Director of Operations Sis Paulsen were co-captains during the 2001-02 season.
Pankowski returns to the UW lineup after a redshirt season as the senior spent the first half of the 2017-18 collegiate season with the U.S. National Team in preparation for the 2018 Winter Olympics. A two-time Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award top-10 finalist and second-team All-American, Pankowski sits No. 9 in school history in scoring with 156 points after recording 58 points her sophomore season and 55 points her junior year. Â
An alternate captain for UW last year, Shaver was a second-team All-WCHA selection her junior year after recording 12 goals and 12 assists. Her 12 goals were the second most on the team last season while she was tied for second on the Badgers in game-winning goals with three. Shaver also recorded a career-high three power-play goals during the 2017-18 campaign and has a career plus/minus rating of +63.
Clark is back for the Badgers after winning silver with Team Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she scored in Canada's semifinal win against the Olympic Athletes of Russia. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native was UW's third-leading scorer in 2016-17 with a career-high 46 points and led UW with a +48 plus/minus rating. Nine of her 20 goals in the 2016-17 were game-winning efforts and her 20 career game-winning goals rank fifth in school history.
A first-team All-USCHO selection in 2017-18, Rolfes played in all 38 games for UW last year and tallied five goals and 16 assists. Her +28 plus/minus rating was tied for the third-best mark on the team while her 51 blocked shots were the second most by a Badger. A native of West Des Moines, Iowa, Rolfes was named to the All-WCHA Tournament Team in 2018 after recording a goal and an assist at the WCHA Final Faceoff. Â Â
The Badgers open their season Sept. 28-29 with a home series at LaBahn Arena against Lindenwood.
