MADISON, Wis. – After going 2-0 in exhibition play, the Wisconsin men's soccer team will travel to Phoenix, Arizona on Friday for its first regular season match of the year against Grand Canyon University. The Badgers will take the pitch at 9 p.m. CT and fans can watch the match live on YouTube.
Â
1. CAPTAIN ISAAC: Redshirt senior Isaac Schlenker was named captain for the 2018 season. The Milwaukee native was a key member of last year's squad, starting in 18 games and playing in all 22. Schlenker helped the UW defense to eight shutouts on the year and scored a goal against Tulsa.
Â
2. FRESH BLOOD: Badger fans will see a lot of new faces in representing the Cardinal and White this season. Along with returning starters Isaac Schlenker, Robin Olofsson, Mitch Guitar and Noah Leibold, UW's 13 newcomers are ready to step up and contribute to Wisconsin's success this season.Â
Â
3. SPRAGG EARNS CHAMPIONSHIP: Wisconsin freshman Charles Spragg will begin his collegiate career with a championship already under his belt. He helped New Zealand's U-20 squad win the Oceania Football Confederation U-19 Championship in Tahiti last weekend. The Auckland native scored four goals throughout the tournament, the second-most for New Zealand.
Â
4. IN THE POLLS: After a Sweet 16 appearance and Big Ten championship last season, the Badgers will enter their season ranked 12th in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Â
Â
5. SCOUTING GRAND CANYON: The Lopes finished the 2017 season 7-11-1 overall and placed sixth in the Western Athletic Conference with a 4-5-1 record. The graduation of top goal-scorer Niki Jackson will likely leave GCU relying on senior Damian German to put the ball in the back of the goal. The Lopes return their goalie Jeremy Pollard. The redshirt sophomore had a .722 save percentage a season ago with a 1.78 goals against average.
