Wisconsin picks up 1-0 win over Valparaiso

MADISON, Wis. – It was a chippy and rainy affair as Wisconsin men's soccer (2-2) grounded out a hard-fought 1-0 victory against a very solid Valparaiso (1-3) team on Monday afternoon at the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Pitch.

Senior captain Isaac Schlenker hammered home the game-winning goal off a penalty kick that beat the goalie easily and landed neatly in the upper corner of the net. The scoring chance came in the second half off an effort by sophomore Alex Alfaro who was knocked down in the box.

It was a physical game, as Valparaiso committed 24 fouls to Wisconsin's 13. Wisconsin outshot Valparaiso 14-8 for the game, and the teams tied on corners, 5-5. Wisconsin finished the weekend tournament with one win and one loss.

On behalf of the Wisconsin men's soccer team a huge thank you goes out to Cory Sims, the head coach of the Madison College men's soccer team, and Madison College for the use of their facilities.

Up next: Wisconsin heads into a very tough road stretch as they head to Illinois to face SIUE on Friday night and Bradley on Sunday.

All-Tournament Team:
Fordham: Janos Loebe, Joergen Oland, Andron Kagramanyan, Bindri Ingimarsson
Wisconsin: Noah Leibold, Dean Cowdroy, Isaac Schlenker
Northwestern: Bardia Kimiavi, Mattias Tomasino
Valparaiso: Rafael Mentzingen, Nacho Miras

Straight from the pitch:
Head coach John Trask
"Whenever there's a change of venue, and thank you to Madison College for allowing us to move the tournament over here, it made for a much better environment than our field would've today. As I just told the guys, this is a great team win, it's hard to win college soccer games. We're 2-2 heading into a very tough place in SIUE which will be a really tough battle but this was a hard-fought win. Valparaiso is a difficult team if you go over the 10-12 years Mike's been there. This is the second game where the guys found something in themselves to get a result, and you know what, I would've liked to have gotten a second goal but to pitch a shutout in this situation is something I'm really proud of. I think there's a lot of reasons we could have had to not play our best and use excuses after a really tough game against Fordham, but we didn't and came out and got it done so big congrats to all the players."
