Young Badgers ready for fall season after strong summer performances
MADISON, Wis. – The 2018-19 Wisconsin women's golf season tees of Sept. 16 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the East-West Match Play Challenge. Wisconsin returns just two starters from their dominant NCAA regionals qualifying team last season, but had stellar play from some rising Badger stars over the summer. Here's a quick glance at some of UW's success over the break:
Â
Junior Bobbi Stricker:
Wisconsin has big shoes to fill after losing three of their starters to graduation last year. Stricker looks up to the challenge after winning the Badger Mutual Insurance Women's Amateur in July, shooting 3-over par to claim her first major amateur tournament. The Badger junior finished ahead of teammates Tess Hackworthy (12th), Jessica Reinecke (8th) and Aya Johnson (4th) at the event.
Â
Senior Tess Hackworthy:
Hackworthy and the Wisconsin State Women's Open is something that just goes well together. The Badger senior claimed the open for a third straight season shooting a one-over par 147 to win the title. Hackworthy is just the third golfer to win the 36-hole event three straight years, winning with the same score of 147 that won her the open in 2016 and 2017.
Â
Former Badger Lexi Harkins:
The former Wisconsin golfer decided to go pro after her dominant NCAA career wrapped up at the 2018 NCAA Regionals last spring. Harkins advanced out of the first-stage qualifier of the LPGA Qualifying school last, finishing in a tie for 55th at 3-over 291, 13 shots behind first place. Harkins also won the CoBank Colorado Open on Sept. 1, shooting a course record 64 third round to win.
Â
Thoughts from head coach Todd Oehrlein:
"The players worked hard and did a good job this summer. They played in a lot of outstanding events, and continued to develop and gain experience."
