Madison native skated two seasons at Harvard
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's hockey team added Madison native Ty Pelton-Byce to the Badgers' roster effective immediately, head coach Tony Granato announced on Thursday. The 6-2, 195-pound forward joins the Badgers after playing two seasons at Harvard.
During his time with the Crimson, Pelton-Byce skated in 66 contests, tallying eight points his freshman season before improving to 25 points in his second year. Pelton-Byce was also the recipient of the team's Donald Angier Hockey Trophy for most improved during his sophomore campaign.
Prior to his stint out east, the forward skated with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL for the 2015-16 season. While a Buccaneer, Pelton-Byce ranked third in scoring with 15 goals and 43 points in 60 contests. Pelton-Byce earned the Bob McCorkle Memorial Award for sportsmanship and was named the squad's most outstanding rookie in 2016.
As a prep player, Pelton-Byce scored 262 points during his career at James Madison Memorial High School and captained the Spartans three of his four years there. He also spent time with Team Wisconsin, leading the squad in scoring during the 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons. The Madison All-City and All-Big 8 Player of the Year in 2015, Pelton-Byce won the Joe Pavelski award for the best forward in Wisconsin in the same year.
Pelton-Byce is the son of former Badgers standout and NHL skater John Byce. Playing in 169 games for UW from 1986 to 1990, the elder Byce tallied 77 goals and 165 points, was a two-time All-WCHA selection and helped Wisconsin to its fifth NCAA title in 1990, scoring a hat trick in the championship game.
Pelton-Byce is also the son of former Badger track and field athlete Alicia Pelton, who went on to play professional basketball in Sweden and who is a member of the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame.
A left-handed shot, Pelton-Byce will wear the No. 27 sweater for the Badgers. He is eligible for practice but will not be eligible to suit up for any games until next fall.
