Wisconsin kicks off the new season with a 6-1 win over DePaul
MADISON, Wis. -- In Danny Westerman's fourth season with the Wisconsin men's tennis program, there seems to be a lot of ambiguity around the team's potential to perform at a high level with so many new faces. Any and all questions were answered in their Friday night debut match against DePaul - a match the Badgers calmly collected by a score of 6-1.
Senior Osgar O'Hoisin played to the bitter end, refusing to give up after dropping the first set. But dogged determination earned the Badger captain a three-set comeback win, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 over DePaul's Borris Spanjaard. The younger Badger sophomore Robert Krill looked to his fellow brother for inspiration and collected a hard-fought three-set win of his own. Krill took down Tamas Zador, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 in a match of pure grit.
Two Badgers, freshmen Lenard Soha and Jared Pratt each tallied their first win in Cardinal and White.
Wisconsin collected the team doubles point to kick off the match with a 1-0 start. O'Hoisin and Pratt were the first ones done with a 6-2 mark, while Krill and junior Chase Colton earned a 6-3 win of their own.
Westerman's Wing:
Head coach Danny Westerman
"Great play from Jesper and Osgar to stay alive and give confidence to the rest of the guys. Then we had two freshmen at the No. 4 and 5 spots who stepped up big. The match was in the balance for a while. We really stepped up there at the end with a young squad. Really proud of the guys. They stepped up big."
Up Next: The Badgers return to the Nielsen on Sunday for a match against Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. (CT).
