Two Badgers in top 10 after day one
ERIN, Wis.- The Badger men's golf team took an in-state trip to Erin Hills for the Marquette Intercollegiate.
Day one went well for freshman Sebastian Iqbal and junior Sam Anderson. Iqbal is currently tied for fifth at even par 72 and Anderson is tied for ninth at one-over-par 73. This is Iqbal's third start with the Badgers and his second round at even par or better.
The team as a whole is sitting tied for sixth at 12-over with 300 strokes. Freshman Coalter Smith is tied for 40th at five-over 77, Nick Robinson tied for 48th at six-over 78 and Griffin Barela tied for 50th at seven-over 79.
Erin Hills is a challenging course and head coach Michael Burcin says "Being at Erin Hills is always a special week for us. It is a close venue which makes a light travel week and it's a venue we are very familiar with. Erin will take the highest level of mental patience and toughness as it is a great test of golf. There is a reason it has hosted a US Open."
Iqbal certainly feels the same way. After finishing his first round, he stated "The course played super tough today so staying patient was key for me. Coach Burcin and I put an emphasis on hitting the ball in the right spots which allowed me to be successful."
Another success comes from Wisconsin's single individual entry. Sophomore Cameron Frazier finished the day at two-over with 74 strokes, settling into a tie for 19th place. He is the third Badger in the top 20 after the first round.
Round two will start at 9 a.m. on Monday morning.
