Flyers goaltender named NHL’s third star of the week
MADISON, Wis. -- After a trio of wins last week, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott was named the NHL's third star of the week. Elliott stopped pucks for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2003-07 before making his NHL debut. During his time at the Wisconsin, Elliott helped the Badgers win the 2006 NCAA championship. His performance that year earned him a spot in the top three for the Hobey Baker Award.
Â
Elliott has had an extensive NHL career, currently skating in his 14th season. The Newmarket, Ontario, native was drafted by the Ottawa Senators late in the 2003 NHL entry draft. He then went on to skate with the Colorado Avalanche, St Louis Blues, and Calgary Flames before signing as a free agent with Philadelphia in 2017. Elliott was named an NHL all-star in 2012 and 2015.
Â
In the week ending Oct. 27, Elliott put three more wins under his belt, rounding out the week with a 3-0-0 record. In four games played, the former Badger averaged a .933 save percentage and 2.02 goals per game. His three wins in net boosted the Philadelphia Flyers record to 5-4-1.
Â
Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand and Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi accompanied Elliott as the first and second stars of the week. Marchand topped off the week with eight points, helping the Bruins up their record to 8-1-2. On the blueline, the Swiss-born captain Josi notched two goals and four assists to total six points.
Â
The extent of Badger talent in the NHL runs deep. In addition to Elliott being named the third star of the week, Joe Pavelski (2004-06) and Craig Smith (2009-11) also appeared on the score sheet.
