First Badger volleyball player to earn first-team honors
\MADISON, Wis. – Sydney Hilley, a junior on the fourth-seeded Wisconsin volleyball team, was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America team, the organization announced on Monday. She has a 3.79 cumulative grade point average in genetics and genomics.
She is just the third Badger to earn the national honor and the first player to collect first-team distinction.
Hilley was named the 2019 Big Ten Setter of the Year, leading the conference with 12.17 assists per set, which ranks second nationally. The 6-foot setter is counting down to 4,000 career assists, needing just 16 helpers to become the sixth Wisconsin athlete and the 51st Big Ten setter to achieve the milestone.
The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, native has also set the Badger offense a Big Ten-leading .295 percent in all matches. That mark would be the second-best all-time (any scoring) hitting percentage in program history, trailing only the .299 mark set in 2017. Wisconsin also hit .300 in conference matches, setting the all-time season record for conference play.
A 2018 second-team All-American, Hilley is a two-time All-Big Ten selection. She was a six-time Big Ten Setter of the Week this season and 11 times in her career, tying former Badger All-American and U.S. National Team member Lauren Carlini for the most UW career awards.
Academically, Hilley is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and also became a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, for having an annual or cumulative GPA of 3.7 or better, in 2018-19. She is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society.
For the fourth time in program history, Wisconsin hosts NCAA Regional action in the UW Field House. The fourth-seeded Badgers (24-6) face off against No. 13 Texas A&M (23-7) on Friday at 1 p.m. live on ESPNU. Fifth-seeded Nebraska (26-4) takes on No. 12 Hawai'I (25-3) in the other regional semifinal at 3:30 p.m. on Friday on ESPN3.
Semifinal winners play on Saturday at 5 p.m. live on ESPNU for the right to advance to the NCAA National Championship on Dec. 19 and Dec. 21 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
