Wisconsin women's track team heads to Ames for weekend competition
AMES, Iowa – The Wisconsin women's track and field team is heading to Ames, Iowa to compete at the Iowa State Classic this weekend.
Hosted by Iowa State, the meet is scheduled to begin on Friday, February 8 with the men's long jump and the preliminary heat of the women's 60 meter hurdles on the track at 12 p.m. Saturday's action is also slated to begin at noon with the men's shot put and the preliminary heat of the women's 60 meters.
The Iowa State Classic will be streamed live on FloTrack ($). In addition, Badger fans can follow along on Instagram and Twitter (@BadgerTrackXC) and catch a recap following the meet on UWBadgers.com.
In addition, three Badgers will be heading to the Millrose Games on Saturday and fans can learn more about them here.Â
1. Last time in Ames: Last year at the Iowa State Classic, Amy Davis and Alicia Monson both rewrote the UW record books. Davis crossed the line in 15 minutes, 44.65 seconds to finish third in the event, while Monson placed fifth in 15:47.23. In addition, Shaelyn Sorensen earned a PR in the invite section of the 5K, crossing the line in 16:19.09.Gabby DesRosiers ran her fastest 400 meters and took sixth with a 55.94 time.Â
2. Aye, aye Captain: Amy Davis, Banke Oginni, and Ebony McClendon will all serve as team captains for the 2019 indoor and outdoor season.
3. Outrageous Oginni: Banke Oginni had a career weekend at the Power Five Invitational in Ann Arbor. She threw a season best 71 feet, 8 ¼ inches, putting her at No. 5 in the country. The redshirt senior also set an indoor PR in shot put and took second place with a 55 feet, 7 ½ inch shot.
4. Going the distance: Many Badgers will be running the distance at the Iowa State Classic. Amy Davis, Shaelyn Sorenson, and Rachel Werking are all scheduled to run the 5000 meters. Madison Mooney, Lucinda Crouch and Emma Langer are slotted to run the mile. Danielle Bellino, Elli Daniels, and Cailyn Biegalski are slated to compete in the 800 meters.
5. Home sweet home: The Badgers return home for their next competition. They will host the Red and White Classic on Friday, Feb. 15. This will be Wisconsin's last meet before the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. .
