UW splits its four matches in opening event of the spring season

PALM COAST, Fla. – The Wisconsin men's golf team opened its spring season by earning sixth place at the 14-team Big Ten Match Play at Hammock Dunes. Seeded 12th entering the tournament, the Badgers defeated fifth-seeded Penn State and eighth-seeded Michigan State while falling to eventual champion Ohio State via a tiebreaker and sixth-seeded Purdue in the fifth-place match.

Senior Jordan Hahn went 3-1 in his four matches, including a 3&1 win over the Big Ten's highest-ranked individual, Will Grimmer of Ohio State, currently ranked 16th in the country. Sophomore Griffin Barela also won three of his four matches at the No. 2 spot, with all three of his wins coming against higher-ranked golfers. Fellow sophomore Tom Calbi went 3-1 as well as every Badger golfer won at least one match.

"I was really happy with how our guys played," UW head coach Michael Burcin said. "The conditions couldn't have been any different between day one and day two and they handled it great. We played really well to end the fall and this was very good start to the spring season to keep that momentum going."
