Hoare and McDonald both set Big Ten and school records on Saturday
NEW YORK — It was a record-setting day for Wisconsin's Morgan McDonald and Olli Hoare, who both became Big Ten Conference record-holders at the prestigious Millrose Games at the Armory Track.
McDonald came out strong in the men's 3,000 meters and crossed the line in 7 minutes, 42.76 seconds, a Big Ten record and the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history.Â
"That was a really good race for me," said McDonald. "I earned a personal best by about 10 seconds against some tough competition, like Grant Fisher from Stanford, and it's always good to race against those guys."
It was a battle down to the final stretch as McDonald faced a familiar foe in Fisher, who was runner-up to McDonald at last fall's NCAA cross country championship. Fisher took the win Saturday, with just a fraction of a second separating him from McDonald.
The senior's time shattered the previous school record, which was set by teammate Olli Hoare earlier this season, by six full seconds.
"This was my first race of the season, so I was pretty happy with that as an opener," McDonald said. "It feels awesome to get the school record in the 3K. That's something I've been going for since I was a freshman, and it's one of my favorite distances. I've been just a few seconds off for a couple of years now, so to finally get that was pretty awesome."
Hoare put up a phenomenal performance of his own in the famed Wanamaker Mile, finishing with a personal-best and NCAA-leading time of 3:54.83. Hoare broke the standing school record, which had belonged to McDonald, and also became the Big Ten record-holder, breaking a 21-year record previously held by Kevin Sullivan of Michigan.
"It was a pretty insane race to be a part of," Hoare said. "The Wanamaker Mile is known to traditionally be pretty prestigious, and the caliber of the field was incredible. It felt pretty fast right away, so I just tried to hang on and I came away with a Big Ten and school record, the No. 1 time in the NCAA and a personal record. I just tried to see how fast I could run, and I definitely managed that."
Hoare's mile checks in as the sixth-fastest in NCAA history.
"This afternoon, in the space of two hours, we saw three historic performances by Alicia Monson, Morgan McDonald and Olli Hoare," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mick Byrne said. "Alicia started off this memorable day winning the women's 3,000 meters and becoming the No. 3 all-time collegian in the event. That set the stage for Morgan, who ran the No. 5 3,000 meters time in indoor collegiate history, and then Olli's NCAA-leading 3:54 mile, which ranks No. 6 in NCAA history."
"Today Olli and Morgan swapped school records and took those records into a new stratosphere."
Up next, the Badgers will return home to host their last indoor meet of the season at the Red and White Classic on Feb. 15. Taking place at The Shell, Wisconsin will face Marquette and UNI, with field events scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and running events at 5:30 p.m.
