Hoare and Monson earn regional accolade from USTFCCCA
MADISON, Wis. – For the first time in the history of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Regional Athletes of the Year award, Wisconsin athletes have swept the men's and women's Track Athletes of the Year award in the Great Lakes Region. Juniors Olli Hoare and Alicia Monson were both named the recipients of this award following outstanding performances throughout the 2019 indoor season, the organization announced Friday.
Â
Hoare started out his season strong, running a huge personal best in the 3,000 meters with a time of 7 minutes, 48.81 seconds at the Indiana Relays, which ranks No 2 in school history and No. 5 nationally. The Sydney, Australia, native went on to post the NCAA-leading time in the mile after competing in the famed Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games. Hoare finished with an overall time of 3:54.83 to become the sixth-best performer with the eighth-best time in collegiate history in the event. He also became the school record and Big Ten record-holder in the event.
Â
Hoare is coming off of another win, earning his sixth Big Ten title last weekend after breezing by the competition in the mile at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The junior is the first Badger to win the award since Reed Connor in 2014.
Â
Alicia Monson has enjoyed a breakout season, starting with her upset win over a professional field in the Fred Lebow 3,000 Meters race at the Millrose Games in New York City. Monson finished with an overall time of 8:45.97, smashing both the school and Big Ten conference records, as well as becoming the third-fastest performer in collegiate history in the event.
Â
Monson is also coming off of two dominant performances at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, sweeping the distance events and winning the 3000 and 5000 meters events. The Amery, Wisconsin, native is the first female UW athlete to win this award since Gwen Jorgensen in 2009.
