Junior breaks school record at Bryan Clay Invitational
ASUZA, Calif. – In his outdoor season debut, Wisconsin men's track and field junior Olli Hoare didn't disappoint as the reigning NCAA outdoor champion in the 1500 meters won the invitational section of the event at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a world-leading performance.
The middle distance ace crossed the line in 3 minute, 37.20 seconds, a time that broke his PR set last year at the meet by more than half a second, but broke the Badgers' school record as well. His mark currently leads the world, the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference. His time also ranks in the top-30 in Australian history.Â
Hoare came out quick, darting to the front of the pack and remaining within the top four runners throughout the race. In the last 200 meters, the Sydney, Australia, native was challenged by Carlos Villareal of Arizona, but Hoare was ultimately able to beat Villareal by a fraction of a second.
On Thursday, redshirt freshman Austin Glynn wrote his name in the UW record books at the Long Beach Invitational after throwing the No. 5 hammer throw mark in program history. Glynn completed the feat again on Friday, returning to the throwing ring and delivering a huge performance in the event, throwing the hammer a whopping 217 feet, 5 inches, to move up to No. 3 all-time at UW. That mark also currently ranks No. 3 in the Big Ten conference.
Teammate Tucker Wedig also competed in the hammer throw, tying for 13th overall with a season-best mark of 209-1.
Sophomore Zach Dybul competed in the high jump and tied for eighth overall, clearing the bar set at 6-7.
Freshman Hudson Kugel was fourth in his section of the 800 meters, crossing the line in 1:50.72.Â
The Badgers will finish out their last day of competition at the Long Beach Invitational for the weekend on Saturday. Action for UW is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the high jump.
