Former Badger to represent U.S. for second-straight year
SARASOTA, Fla. — Former Wisconsin men's rower Michael Knippen won the men's single sculls Sunday at the 2019 Senior National Team Trials at Nathan Benderson Park. The victory earned him a spot on the U.S. national team that will race at the 2019 World Rowing Championships this August in Austria.
This year's event marks Knippen's second time representing the U.S. at the championships in as many years. Last year, Knippen placed 11th in the men's quadruple sculls.
Knippen won the men's single sculls with a time of 7:12.81, completing the race nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place finisher Gregory Ansolabehere of the Penn Athletic Club.
A native of Germantown, Wisconsin, Knippen competed in the Badgers' second varsity eight for the majority of his Wisconsin career, highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships in the event.
His second varsity eight crew took 12th at the 2015 IRAs during a season in which he spent much of the year with UW's varsity eight. As a sophomore, he helped the second varsity eight to an eighth place finish at the 2014 IRA championships.
