Senior homers twice in 12-6 beatdown of Purdue
WEST LAYFAYETTE, Ind. – The base path of Bittinger Stadium was full of action Saturday afternoon as the Wisconsin softball team out powered Purdue with a 12-6 decision. The Badgers (35-10 overall, 12-7 B1G) are 2-0 on the weekend over the Boilermakers (30-22, 6-13) with one game left in the series.
Senior Kelly Welsh had an explosive game for the Badgers, blasting two home runs to bring in five of UW's 12 runs. Her first long ball of the game came in the first at bat of the fourth inning, a solo shot to center field. She followed that up with her first career grand slam in the fifth inning putting the Badgers up 10-2.
Sophomore Taylor Johnson went yard in the sixth inning for three UW home runs in three consecutive innings. Johnson's goner was a two-run shot to center field that scored Kayla Konwent as well.
After Purdue fielded a double play early in the third frame, the Badgers rallied for three run off three hits. Senior Stephanie Lombardo started the rally with a walk and advanced to third off a Jordan Little double. Junior Caroline Hedgcock scored Lombardo with a single, and sophomore Lauren Foster sent the remaining runners home with a double to left field.
In the first inning, Johnson and Hedgcock put up UW's first two runs of the day off a wild pitch and passed ball, respectively.
Pitcher Haley Hestekin picked up the win in today's game after pitching five innings with six strikeouts.
