Knippen, Amberger, Joyce earn U.S. national team spots

Pair of Badger men’s rowing alumni, current women’s rower to represent Team USA at international events
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Three Badgers earned their spots on rowing national teams Wednesday on Lake Mercer at the 2019 USRowing Under 19, Under 23, Para and Senior Trails III.
Making the senior national team were men's rowers Michael Knippen (Germantown, Wis.) and Tristan Amberger (Towson, Md.), who won the men's quadruple sculls final.
The Craftsbury/Penn AC composite crew that included Knippen and Amberger finished 2000 meters in 5:46.42, 11.04 seconds ahead of the second-place crew from Craftsbury Sculling Center.Â
They will compete in the 2019 World Rowing Championships that will run Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Linz, Austria.
Knippen, a 2016 UW graduate, will make his second consecutive appearance at senior worlds after taking 11th at the 2018 event in the men's quadruple sculls, while 2018 UW grad Amberger's previous national team experience includes the men's quad at the 2017 Under 23 World Championships.
Winning the under 23 women's lightweight double sculls was Grace Joyce (Northfield, Illinois). Racing with Elizabeth Ray, the rising senior finished in 7:13.29 to grab her spot for the under 23 world championships. The two finished 6.19 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.Â
They will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 24-28 in Sarasota, Florida.
UW junior Grace D'Souza (Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin) placed second in the under 23 women's lightweight single sculls, finishing in 8:02.85 and behind winner Brigid Kennedy. Badger Rachel Illgen also competed in the event, but fell short of the final.
Former Badger Dani Dewitt (Parkersburg, West Virginia) also competed in the women's lightweight single sculls, but failed to reach the final.
In addition, current UW women's senior openweight rowers Lauren O'Connor (Belleville, Wisconsin) and Rebekah Armstrong (Washington D.C.) competed in the under 23 women's double sculls trails, with O'Connor taking third in the second heat and second in the repechage, and Armstrong placing fourth in the second heat and then third in her repechage, but both missing out on the final.
