MADISON, Wis. -- Fans have their first chance to see the 2019 Badgers on Saturday when the team hosts its annual Red vs. White scrimmage in the UW Field House. First serve is at noon. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the Badgers will be available for autographs following the match.
1. RANKED AMONG THE BEST, AGAIN: Wisconsin is ranked fifth in the preseason AVCA Top-25 Coaches' poll, the fifth-straight year that UW has opened the season among the top-10 teams in the country.
2. STRENGTH RETURNS: UW lost only two players from its 2018 squad, returning five starters plus its libero as well as to five All-Americans. The Badgers return more than 83 percent of their kills, service aces, digs and blocks for 2019.
3. NATION'S BEST: Junior Dana Rettke returns as the Big Ten leader in hitting percentage (.423) and blocks per set (1.54). The 6-foot-8 middle blocker leads all returning players in the nation in hitting percentage and ranks fourth in blocks per set. Junior Sydney Hilley ranks third nationally with 11.87 assists per set.
4. MOVING UP TO SECOND: Head coach Kelly Sheffield has 160 wins at Wisconsin, needing only one more win to move into a tie for second on the UW all-time winningest coach list. He would equal John Cook (1992-98), who won 161 matches with the Badgers from 1992-98.
5. SCOUTING GREEN BAY: In 45 years of competition, the Badger volleyball program is counting down to 1,000 wins. Wisconsin is 993-536-12, beginning its 46th year of play.
