Fans get their first look at Badger volleyball during annual scrimmage
Madison, WI – The Wisconsin volleyball team kicked off its 2019 season on Saturday afternoon for its annual Red vs. White scrimmage in the UW Field House. The excitement for a new season was equal amongst the team and over 1300 fans.
The two teams matched up well, splitting the match at two sets a piece. Red came through in sets one and three (28-26, 26-24) while White took sets two and four (25-20, 25-23).
White largely outperformed Red statistically, with 58-48 in kills, 10-4 in service aces, and 60-49 digs, but it was the defensive effort of the Red team that kept them in the fight, out-blocking White 14-11.
Four players finished with double-figure kills, led by Dana Rettke with 16, and five players totaled double-figure digs, led by junior transfer Lauren Barnes with 20.
Team captain Sydney Hilley put together a standout performance with 41 assists, 12 digs and six blocks, and Grace Loberg added 14 kills and a match-high four service aces.
"I don't think anybody was drastically different than what we've seen day in and day out. Let's not try to be anything that we're not but let's go out and do it, and play our game. I thought everyone had the right mentality. You could tell everyone was having fun, the players were having fun out there, the fans were having fun. It was a good fun match to start."

"That was fun. I thought everyone had their moments. They'll be a lot of things we'll be able to learn from that which is always good. What I liked was our ability to bounce back after errors."I don't think anybody was drastically different than what we've seen day in and day out.
