Hackworthy, Badgers win East-West Match Play Challenge stroke play portion
MADISON, Wis. -Â The East- West Match Play Challenge started this Monday morning at University Ridge. Due to weather, play was canceled on Sunday and the format of the tournament changed. Monday consisted of 36 holes of stroke play.
The Badgers had an exciting day at University Ridge as they took home first place in the stroke play portion of the tournament and claimed the individual title.Â
Coming off of last week's 10th-place finish at the Glass City Invitational coach Todd Oehrlein said "I thought we played really well the final round last week, which provided some optimism. Each day is a new day though, so you just have to keep working hard to improve each day. This team is very dedicated and I am so excited for them."
Through the first 18 holes, the four counting scores for the Badgers put the team in a tie for second place with a three-over-par 291. Redshirt senior Tess Hackworthy led the team as she carded a two-under-par 70 and finished the first round tied for third place.
The second round provided an opportunity for the Badgers to improve as they shaved three strokes off their first-round score and finished at even-par 288. Combining both rounds of 18, the Badgers finished the stroke play portion of the tournament with a three-over-par 579. All five players placed in the top 25 and the team as a whole claimed first place, up two strokes over second place Iowa State.
Coach Oehrlein added "Today was a culmination of daily commitment from the whole team. We did a pretty good job of minimizing mistakes and I was really proud of how they bounced back all day. They really never compounded mistakes or strung bad holes together. That's great composure and maturity, and is always a great sign in a team. Execution is just so hard when a player loses composure. We were really solid all day in these areas."
Hackworthy continued her momentum, improving by one stroke in the second round and finishing with a three-under-par 69, totaling five-under-par 139 for the day. She recorded 18-hole and 36-hole career low scores, claiming her first tournament title and her first top-10 finish.
When asked how she felt after her rounds today, Hackworthy responded "It's super special to be here. Everyone always talks about how they love coming here and we love hosting them. There's a completely different vibe and that definitely helped for me personally to have that feeling out there, a little bit more positive energy and a little bit more comfort. And I think that transferred into the rest of the team as well."
Â
The Badgers also have three individuals competing. Of the three, redshirt junior Bobbi Stricker leads, shooting a three-over-par 75 during the first round and finished the second with a two-over-par 74. She sits in 22nd place.
Freshman Nicole Ciskowski, who made her first appearance with the Badgers as an individual today, finishes tied for 24th place, along with freshman Emily Lauterbach and sophomore Tracy Lee at six-over-par 150.
Match play begins Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. with Wisconsin facing off against Iowa State in the championship bracket.Â
