MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team opens its season this Sunday-Tuesday as it hosts the Badger Invitational at University RidgeÂ
Here are five things to know before play begins on Sunday
Â
1. First Time Feature: Freshman Coalter Smith earned himself an exemption into the Badger Invitational by placing second in the first round of Badger QSchool earlier this week. This will be his first tournament with the Badgers. Smith was named Michigan's 2019 Mr. Golf and he made three appearances at the MHSAA state tournament.
Â
2. Fresh Faces: In addition to Smith, the Badgers welcome two other freshmen. Sebastian Iqbal of San Jose, Calif. and Jack Blair of Wauwatosa, Wis. both boast some impressive golf achievements. Iqbal was the first person from his high school to appear at the California state championship and he held the low score at all 12 tournaments in his senior season. Blair was the 2019 WIAA state runner-up and made state appearances all four years as well as being named first team all-state in 2017-19.
3. Barela is Back: Junior Griffin Barela has also secured a spot at the Badger Invitational by placing first in the first round of Badger QSchool. Barela is the team's top returner, averaging 72.78 strokes per round last year. During the 2018-19 season, he had five top-25 finishes and a 54-hole best of 203 strokes to tie for fourth at the Hawkeye Invitational this past April.
4. The Field:  Wisconsin takes on 15 other schools, up from 11 other schools at last year's Badger Invitational. The line-up includes Abilene Christian, Coastal Carolina, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas, Miami (Oh.), Ole Miss, Nevada, NIU, Notre Dame, Rutgers, South Dakota State, UNCG, Wofford and Xavier. This will be Wisconsin's sixth year in a row hosting the Badger Invitational and the 11th overall invitational.Â
Â
5. Tee It Up: The tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday at the par 72, 7294 yard University Ridge and will follow a tee-time format all three days. Players will tee off on both the first and 10th holes at 9 a.m. each day.
