Wisconsin starts duel play apart of ITA Kick-Off Weekend
MADISON, Wis. -- The Badger women's tennis team starts their spring duel play this weekend in Columbia, South Carolina during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament. Wisconsin will face off against Georgia Tech Saturday at noon and will face either South Carolina or Big Ten rival Purdue on Sunday. Here are five thing you need to know before UW hits the courts.
1. RECAPPING METROPLEX MANIA: Two weekends ago, the Badgers opened up their spring season in tournament play at the Metroplex Mania Invite in Dallas, Texas. They faced teams from Wake Forest, Denver and Southern Methodist totaling 17 wins through both singles and doubles play.
2. TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament is an event taking place in 26 different locations from January 24-27. A total of 60 of the top teams based on last year's finishing rankings were invited and assigned a host institution. Wisconsin ended last year ranked No. 39 in the country and will face No. 35 Georgia Tech to start out the weekend. A win against Georgia Tech would advance UW to the championship match on Sunday against either Purdue or South Carolina.Weekend winners will them advance to the National Team Indoors tournament hosted by Illinois.
3. SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH: The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets ended last year ranked No. 35 in the country and are currently 6-0 this season. They boast two ranked singles players in No. 53 Kenya Jones and No. 73 Gia Cohen along with a ranked doubles pair in #51 Victoria Flores and Kenya Jones. While Wisconsin hasn't seen duel play with this season's group of Badgers, picking the right matchups will be key to Wisconsin's victory.
