2017 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year recognized by College Soccer News
MADISON, Wis. -- One of the best Big Ten men's soccer players in recent years, forward Chris Mueller made Wisconsin proud as a member of the College Soccer News All-Decade Team announced last month.
Currently tearing up the MLS for Orlando City SC, the 2017 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year was named to the third team on the All-Decade Team list. Mueller was one of seven players from three Big Ten schools honored by the publication, joining one from Maryland and five from Indiana. He is one of 36 players recognized from 21 schools across the country.Â
As a senior in 2017, Mueller left Wisconsin as one of the most highly-decorated players to ever walk the McClimon grass. The Schaumburg, Illinois, native led the nation, the Big Ten and the team with 20 assists while also leading the Big Ten and the team with 72 shots, 30 shots on goal and 38 points. He finished 10th all-time with 22 career goals at Wisconsin, and second with 35 career assists, four assists behind the program-leader. Mueller set the Wisconsin school record for assists in a season (20) -- a record that stood since 1981.
Mueller also earned All-Big Ten first team and Midwest All-Region first team in both 2016 and 2017 and was named NSCAA All-American in 2016.
Most importantly, Mueller helped the Badgers to the 2017 Big Ten Championship that propelled the squad into the NCAA tournament, where they reached the round of 16, before an overtime loss to Akron derailed UW's run.
He went on to become the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, and is currently in his third year with Orlando City SC. He ranks among the league's top seven with seven goals and the top eight with six assists.
Spanning from 2010 to 2019, the All-Decade Team is comprised of players across the nation including multiple selections from Stanford, Indiana, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Creighton and Akron. Each national championship team during the decade had at least one player named: Akron (2010), North Carolina (2011), Indiana (2012), Notre Dame (2013), Virginia (2014), Stanford (2015, 2016, 2017), Maryland (2018) and Georgetown (2019).
