MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's hockey team will begin the 2020-21 season playing home games at LaBahn Arena.
The six-time NCAA champion Badgers practice regularly at the rink located next door to the Kohl Center, their normal game arena, with their locker room complex located in the connecting underground tunnel that travels between the two facilities.
"There are a few different reasons to do this, but without fans at our games, we think LaBahn Arena will help create the best possible game atmosphere for our team," head coach Tony Granato said.
"We're fortunate to have two rinks like the Kohl Center and LaBahn Arena to use on a daily basis. There's nothing like 15,000 fans in the Kohl Center, but LaBahn Arena ranks among the best in the country too."
LaBahn Arena, regular home for the five-time NCAA champion Wisconsin women's program, boasts ice sheet dimensions of 200 feet by 90 feet. The Kohl Center ice is 200-by-97 feet, while standard NHL ice is 200-by-85 feet.
The Badgers will begin the season without fans at its home games. Should that change during the season, Wisconsin could move its games back to the Kohl Center. LaBahn Arena can hold 2,273 fans while the Kohl Center holds 15,359 for hockey.
LaBahn Arena is named after Charles (UW-Madison '49) and Mary Ann LaBahn, who made the primary donation on the project. Charles, a two-time letterwinner for UW swimming, and Mary Ann are longtime supporters of various campus initiatives, with Charles serving as director of the UW Foundation (1974-96) and as chairman of the Wisconsin Alumni Association (1988-89).
The ice sheet at LaBahn Arena is named the Lance Johnson Memorial Rink in recognition of a major gift to UW Athletics from Peter O. Johnson and his son, Erik S. Johnson, and their families, in honor of the avid and accomplished Madison area youth hockey player who passed away in a 1987 car accident.
The Big Ten announced earlier this month that the 2020-21 hockey season will start as early as Nov 13, with the Badgers playing 24 conference games, in addition to four games against Arizona State as part of a scheduling agreement for the coming campaign.
