Badgers close out homestand with Saturday-Sunday series against the Sun Devils
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's hockey team completes its homestand with a pair of games against Arizona State on Saturday and Sunda at LaBahn Arena. Saturday's puck drop is 7 p.m. CT, while Sunday is a 4 p.m. CT. Both games air on Fox Sports Wisconsin.
Here are six quick things to know before tuning in:
Â
1. SWEET NOVEMBER: Wisconsin is 4-2-0 in November, giving the program its most victories for the month since the 2009–10 team went 5-3-0. UW's games this weekend against the Sun Devils give UW a chance to up this year's total. The 2008-09 Badgers went 7-1-1 in November.
2. DOING TRICKS WITH HATS:Â Sophomore forward Cole Caufield, the reigning Big Ten First Star of the Week for his four-goal, six-point performance last week, posted his second career hat trick on Tuesday in UW's 7-3 victory over Penn State.Â
The three-goal night made Caufield the first Badger since Robbie Earl (2003–06) to have two hat tricks in a UW career.
Caufield has a long way to go for the UW record. UW Athletics Hall of Famer Bert DeHate (1966–70) set the UW standard with 15 career hat tricks.
3. FRESH CONTRIBUTIONS:Â After going the first four games of the season without a freshman scoring a point, a pair of UW first-year skaters jumped into the mix big time against Penn State. Freshman forward and Eau Claire native Sam Stange scored his first two career goals in Monday's contest, then added a third on Tuesday. The 2020 Detroit Red Wings draft pick is one goal shy of the team goal-scoring lead.
Freshman defenseman Anthony Kehrer also made an impression on the scoresheet with a pair of assists in both games against the Nittany Lions. His four points lead all UW defensemen and freshman.
Â
4. MATCH GAME:Â Junior forward Brock Caufield has two goals and four points through six games. That gives him one more goal and one more point than he had all of last season in 31 appearances. He had seven goals and 12 points his freshman season.
Senior forward Linus Weissbach leads the Badgers with nine points through six games. The 2017 Buffalo Sabres draft choice's four goals already match his total from last season.Â
UW's current career scoring leader with 82 points (26 goals, 56 assists), Weissbach is one of five Badgers with 100 career college games played (Baker, Inamoto, Ess, Pelton-Byce).
Junior forward Dominck Mersch scored a goal and an assist on Tuesday against Penn State, his first goal and first multi-point game since Jan. 26, 2019, at Minnesota. Mersch ended a 49-game drought with the goal.
Â
5. SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE: Arizona State, which is playing its entire season on the road, enters this weekend's series at 0-3-1 on the season after trips to Michigan (0-2-0) and Michigan State (0-1-1). Â
The Badgers and Sun Devils are scheduled to play four games in Madison as part of a Big Ten schedule agreement. ASU is set to play 28 games against the Big Ten.
UW is 4-0-0 all-time against ASU, with all four games played at the Kohl Center. Led by Roman Ahcan, UW captured 7-6 and 6-2 contests on Feb. 21-22 in the most recent meetings.
Ahcan had a five-point game and a hat trick in the 7-6 victory on Feb. 21 and scored with 1:09 left in regulation to break a 6-6 tie and complete the hat trick. The Badgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Feb. 22 and skated to a 6-2 victory, with Ahcan getting the game-winning goal for the second consecutive night.
Arizona State senior forward Sean Dhooghe, brother of current Badger senior forward Jason Dhooghe, played the last three years as a Badger before transferring to ASU. He scored 26 goals and 56 points in 102 games at Wisconsin.

Solid might be an understatement for freshman defenseman @KehrerAnthony and his play so far this season.
