Duo poised to join Canada’s Dylan Holloway at World Junior Championship in Edmonton
MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore forward Cole Caufield and former Badger Alex Turcotte are two of 29 players named to the U.S. National Junior Team camp roster that will compete at the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship. The event runs Dec. 25-Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.
The group will gather for a training camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan, starting Dec. 6, and the roster will be cut down to 25 players before the squad departs for Edmonton on Dec. 13.
2019 NHL first-round draft picks, Caufield (Stevens Point) and Turcotte (Island Lake, Illinois) both look to make their second appearance at the event after skating for Team USA last year in the Czech Republic. Caufield was chosen 15th by the Montreal Canadiens, while Turcotte went No. 5 to the Los Angeles Kings.
The United States medaled in four consecutive World Junior Championships (2019-silver, 2018-bronze, 2017-gold, 2016-bronze) before last year, which marked the first time in U.S. history. Former Badgers K'Andre Miller (2019), Trent Frederic (2018) and Luke Kunin (2017) helped the American's cause.
The Americans have captured four gold medals in tournament history, which officially began in 1977, and in all four instances, the team captain or head coach were Wisconsin Badgers. Mike Eaves served as head coach in 2004 during Team USA's first gold medal, while Derek Stepan captained the 2010 team, Jake McCabe captained the 2013 squad and Luke Kunin directed the 2017 group to gold.Â
All-time, 57 Badgers have played in the World Junior Championship prior to this year's event.
That could become 58 should forward Dylan Holloway (Bragg Creek, Alberta) skate for Team Canada. Holloway is already in Alberta preparing for the event at the National Junior Team SportChek Selection Camp.
Holloway, who was a candidate for last year's Canadian National Junior Team, was chosen earlier this fall in the first round of the NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers with the 14th overall pick.
In addition to the three Badgers skaters, UW equipment manager Nate LaPoint will serve in a similar capacity for Team USA at the championship.
All Team USA games will air on on NHL Network, as well as the full slate of preliminary round, quarterfinal, semifinal and medal round games.Â
