Ahcan six-point weekend, Turcotte five-point weekend earn recognition
MADISON, Wis. -- After an impressive sweep over No. 9 Arizona State in Wisconsin's last home series of the season, two Wisconsin Badgers made the Big Ten's Stars of the Week list, while one was named the NCAA No. 1 Star of the Week.
Â
Sophomore forward Roman Ahcan was named both the NCAA and Big Ten First Star of the Week after his career weekend. Ahcan tallied his first career hat trick and two assists on Friday against ASU for his fist career five-point effort. He scored with 1:09 in regulation for the game winning goal in the back and forth match up, edging out the Sun Devils, 7-6. Ahcan scored the game-winning goal on Saturday as well to help the Badgers to a 6-2 victory. He totaled six points for the weekend. He currently stands with 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points in 29 games played this season. This is the second time Ahcan has been named a Big Ten Star of the Week, previously named second star for the week of Jan. 14.
Â
The hat trick was the first for the Badgers at the Kohl Center since defenseman Justin Schultz tallied three times against Michigan State on Nov. 27, 2010. It also gave Wisconsin two hat tricks in the same season for the first time since the 2010–11 campaign.
Ahcan's five-point effort marked the first for a Badger since Mark Zengerle had a goal and four assists against Merychurst on Nov. 25, 2011.
Alex Turcotte rounds out the Big Ten Stars of the Week, named third star after finding the back of the net twice this weekend and notching three assists for five points in two games. Both of Turcotte's goals were scored on Friday, while he added an assist in the game. On Saturday, one of his assists was the primary one on Ahcan's game-winning goal. After missing a portion of the season due to injury, Turcotte has eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 25 games played.
Â
The Badgers will play their final series of the regular season this weekend, Feb 28-29, when they head to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State on Friday at 5 p.m. CT and Saturday at 7 p.m. Both contests are televised on BTN, and can be heard on 1310 WIBA, the Wisconsin Sports Network and the iheart radio app.
