MADISON, Wis. — Continuing Wisconsin's storied international rowing history, a total of six Badgers spanning all three rowing programs earned honorary invites to USRowing's 2020 Under 23 Selection Camp, the sports governing body announced on Wednesday. Three of the group were also invited to the 2019 selection camp.
"While understandably the pandemic has put a halt to the 2020 international racing schedule, USRowing wants to recognize those athletes who have earned invitations to our 2020 Under 23 National Team selection camps," said Matt Imes, former Wisconsin men's rower and current USRowing High Performance Director.
The U.S. Under 23 National Team would have competed at the 2020 World Rowing Under 23 Championships this August in Bled, Slovenia.
On the women's side, sophomore Brandi Gueths and junior Isa Darvin were nominated for the openweights, with camp scheduled for Iowa City, Iowa. For the lightweight women's camp, junior Grace D'Souza received an invite to the camp that was scheduled for Boston. Both Darvin and D'Souza earned invites to last year's camps.
Three of Wisconsin's men's rowers were also recognized to participate in this elite national selection.
Junior Adam Wehking, sophomore Breck Duncan and junior coxswain James Catalano were honorary selections to the 2020 USRowing Selection Camp. Catalano took part in last year's camp, as well.
All time, 38 Wisconsin women's rowers and 65 men's rowers have represented the United States on Olympic, World Championship and Under 23 World Championship teams, with 17 women and 13 men competing at the Olympics. The women's program's international history dates back to 1975 during the infancy of Badger women's rowing, while the men's international success began with the 1968 Olympics.
