Wisconsin track and cross country join together for No Kid Hungry

MADISON, Wis - Two weeks ago, the Wisconsin track and cross country teams took part in a nationwide Run Against Hunger to raise money for No Kid Hungry. The cancelation of schools across the United States has left millions of children facing food insecurities due to COVID 19.
Wisconsin sophomore Hannah Reale and junior Alissa Niggemann organized Wisconsin's participation in the event, working up with their teammates from all over the world to take part in a cause bigger than themselves. The athletes pledged to run as many miles as they could in a week while raising money to provide meals for hungry children across the country.
"During these difficult times, I am so proud of how our team came together to support such a great cause," Reale said. "We showed how no matter the circumstances, we stand behind what it means to be a Badger!"
Reale, who took a class on world hunger and nutrition last semester, added that her class "really helped catch my eye of how important this issue is across our communities. There are so many people who are going without meals.
"It was really cool to bring our team together especially since everyone is spread across the world right now. Right now during this time, we need to join together to help those in need."
While all the Badgers were not in Madison, they worked as a team from across the world to use their platform to help children in need. Every dollar raised provided 10 meals for children in need across the country. The team ran a total of 1,313 miles to raise $4,035, which provides over 40,000 meals for children facing food insecurities. The UW student-athletes raised the second-most amount of money for No Kid Hungry in the NCAA. This couldn't have been possible without the help from family, teammates, Badger fans and supporters.
From California to New Jersey and back home in Wisconsin, the Badgers came together to join the fight in running against hunger.
"This time instead of running and training to win a title or score points on the track, our motive was to still continue our training as best were were able with simply running or cross training where we were to suppose a greater cause and raise awareness for those in need," Niggemann added. "Being a part of this team means a lot to myself, these girls are family to me, and it has been difficult since most of my teammates are not in Madison at the moment. But to be able to have an opportunity like this this for all of us to connect, and accomplish a goal in a similar fashion before COVID-19 when we were all together, felt awesome.
"My teammates efforts to rally, support and contribute to this cause beautifully demonstrates how much this team supports each other but also cares for those inside and outside of our communities. The importance of caring for one another during these unprecedented times, is so important because you simply don't know what someone could be going through each day, and to use our team's platform for a better cause and greater impact, is something to always be excited about. I hope our team can continue to do these kinds of things in the future, whether we are together or apart, since we have confidence we can achieve whatever challenges and opportunities are to come. "
