Wisconsin adds former American Athletic Conference Libero of the Year
MADISON, Wis. – Head coach Kelly Sheffield has announced that Giorgia Civita, a 5 foot, six libero transfer from Wichita State University, will join the Wisconsin volleyball team this fall.
"Giorgia is a baller. She loves the game and she loves being in the gym," Sheffield said. "One of the things that jumps out at you while watching her play is her ability to read the game. She has a lot of range in serve receive and has really nice touch and feel. Defensively she also covers a lot of real estate.Â
Â
"She's been out for a good portion of the past year, but she has a lot of experience playing the game and has the ability to help us out at some point. I'm looking forward to getting a chance to work with her."
Â
A native of Milan, Italy, Civita (pronounced CHE vee tah) was named the 2018 American Athletic Conference Libero of the Year, earning first-team all-conference honors. She set a Wichita State single season for both total digs (728) and digs per set (5.78) as a redshirt sophomore.
As a redshirt freshman, Civita earned second-team all-conference accolades, tallying 579 digs (5.22/set). She played in 11 matches as a true freshman in 2016 before earning a medical hardship. Civita also missed the 2019 season due to injury.
For her career, Civita played in 276 sets and 76 matches in two-plus years for the Shockers. She tallied 1,448 digs, ranking seventh on the WSU career digs list, averaging 5.25 for her career. The libero also added 263 assists (0.95/set) and 37 service aces (0.13/set).
As a prep, Civita played for club team Unendo Yamamay Busto Arisizio in the province of Varese, being named best libero of Italy twice. She was also named the best libero of the Lombardia region for five years. Civita competed with the Italian U18 National Team, being named the Best Libero at the European Championship in 2013 and at the U18 Italian National Championships in 2014.
Civita becomes the fifth newcomer for the Badgers in 2020. She joins graduate transfer Deahna Kraft as well as true freshmen Jade Demps, M.J. Hammill and Devyn Robinson.
