LINCOLN, Neb. — No. 18 Wisconsin dropped a gritty dual to No. 7 Nebraska, 22-15, on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.
The Badgers (1-3 B1G) and Huskers (4-1 B1G) swapped leads back and forth through nine matches as the team dual came down to a sudden-overtime contest at heavyweight. Tied up 2-2 after three periods, Nebraska's Christian Lance scored a takedown against Wisconsin's Trent Hillger for the 4-2 decision victory. The takedown was challenged by the Badgers' coaching staff, but upheld by the officials after review to give the Huskers the team dual victory.
Wisconsin was led in scoring by No. 21 Garrett Model at 157 pounds after he pinned Nebraska's No. 33 Caleb Licking in 4:26. The fall marks Model's first pin of this season as he picked up the bonus points for the Badgers.
No. 9 Chris Weiler continues to impress for Wisconsin at 184 pounds. The transfer from Lehigh was down 6-0 after a near fall by his opponent No. 7 Taylor Venz, but rallied back to control the match. Weiler scored a late takedown to tie the match 10-10 in the third period and sealed his one-point victory thanks to over two minutes of riding time.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Burwick added another win to his belt after earning a 3-2 decision against Tucker Sjomeling at 133 pounds. Teammate Drew Scharenbrock used a late reversal in the closing seconds of his match to take a 7-6 upset decision over Nebraska's 16th-ranked Brock Hardy.
Nebraska lost two team points during the dual due to penalties (throwing headgear, team mat violation).
Full results are below for the Badgers, including several extra matches that didn't count in the team dual scoring. These matches do count for each individual wrestler for the season.
Two Badgers earned victories in the extra matches, led by Eric Barnett's 18-2 tech fall victory against Jerimiah Reno in 4:35 at 125 pounds. Devin Bahr earned his third victory in extra matches this season, taking down Kevon Davenport for a 9-4 decision at 157 pounds.
In a quick reshuffling of the Big Ten schedule, Wisconsin will remain home this week as Penn State comes to the UW Field House on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a rescheduled dual match. More information will be shared as it's made available. The Badgers tri-meet at Michigan with Penn State next weekend was initially postponed due to Michigan's shutdown. Wisconsin's match with Michigan will remain postponed at this time.
