MADISON, Wis. – TopDrawerSoccer and College Soccer News announced their respective Teams of the Week on Tuesday and a pair of Badgers made the list.
Senior Andrew Akindele was honored by TopDrawerSoccer after scoring his first goal of the season in a 1-0 victory against No. 8 Maryland.
Akindele, a member of the TopDrawerSoccer Top-100 freshmen, is second on the team in points with five (one goal, three assists).
After Friday's match, the forward mentioned how the team has been preparing throughout the past couple months, which has led the Badgers to the top of the Big Ten standings three games into the conference season.
"We've been pushing this whole season," Akindele said. "We deserve to be up there."
Senior Zach Klancnik earned recognition by College Soccer News for his defensive effort against No. 8 Maryland. He was a pivotal component to the Badger back line that held the Terrapins to a season-low two shots on goal and their third scoreless contest.
The senior captain is also a member of the 2019 Big Ten All-Tournament Team. Both Akindele and Klancnik were members of the All-Big Ten freshmen team in 2018 and have been key contributors to UW's success over the past month as they have gone 5-0-1 in the last six games.
This is Akindele's and Klancnik's first Player of the Week honor and UW's first national team of the week selection since 2016 when Mike Catalona was recognized with the distinction.
Next up for Wisconsin is a matchup at Ohio State on Friday. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
