Mersch scores Badgers lone goal
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team (0-2-0) suffered a 5-1 loss to non-conference opponent Michigan Tech (2-0-0) in the second game of a two-game series on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
Wisconsin came out of the gate eager to take another shot at the Huskies. Roman Ahcan drew a penalty early on in the first period which seemed to give the Badgers a short-lived edge in competition.
Michigan Tech struck first at 11:57 in the first period, just 30 seconds into its power play for a 1-0 lead. Trenton Bliss netted the Huskies goal, assisted by Colin Swoyer and Tommy Parrottino.
The Huskies went up 2-0 at 15:41 of the first with a goal from Alec Broetzman, assisted by Nick Nardella and Eric Gotz. They scored again on the power play with 22 seconds remaining in the period.
Michigan Tech scored twice more in the first three minutes of the second period to increase their lead to 5-0.
Senior forward Dominick Mersch scored at 3:11 of the third period to put the Badgers on the board and avoid the shutout. Freshman defenseman Corson Ceulemans fired a shot at the net where Caden Brown got a piece of the puck before it ricocheted off Mersch's shoulder and over the goal line.
The Badgers were out shot, 28-22.
