Badgers swept by Spartans

Baker, Stange score in 5-2 loss

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team fell 5-2 to the Michigan State Spartans in the final game of its weekend series at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday.

The Badgers (4-10-0, 2-6-0 1-0-0 Big Ten) were able to overcome an initial two-goal deficit but fell at the hands of the Spartans (8-5-1, 3-3-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) in the third period.

Michigan State's Mitchell Lewandowski netted a goal on a one-timer during a rush on a pass from Jesse Tucker at 3:21 in the first period. The goal came as a result of pressuring the Badgers' offense in the neutral zone and forcing a turnover.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead with a goal from Dennis Cesana on the power play at 12:41 in the first. Nash Nienhuis and Kristof Papp set up Cesana in the shooting lane where he fired the puck through a screen of players.

Badger captain Tarek Baker cut the Spartans' lead in half on the power play at 4:15 into the second period. Roman Ahcan walked in and fired a shot at the net which bounced off the back boards and to the edge of the crease where Baker stood ready to tap the puck home.

Sophomore forward Sam Stange tied the score 2-2 at 8:29 in the second. The Badgers battled for the puck along the board in the neutral zone before Brock Caufield fed a loose puck to Stange. The sophomore circled back through the zone and walked in the Spartans' end to rip a shot low blocker side of the post to even it up for the Badgers.

The Spartans broke the tie 2:31 into the third period with a power-play goal from Jeremy Davidson, assisted by Lewandowski and Papp

Jesse Tucker pounced on a rebound off a shot from Nienhuis at 5:26 to restore the Spartans' two-goal lead, going up 4-2.

Davidson notched his second goal of the game to give the Spartans a 5-2 lead at 11:18 in the third period. Cole Krygier skated deep into the Badgers' zone and made a drop pass to Griffin Loughran who set up Davidson in front of the net.

Wisconsin could not make up the deficit and ultimately fell 5-2 to Michigan State despite outshooting the Spartans 50-30. Goaltender Jared Moe made 25 saves on the night.
