Badgers fall 2-1 to Santa Clara in third round of NCAA tournament

Jaskaniec scores 9th goal of the season
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Wisconsin women's soccer team saw its season draw to a close on Sunday as the Badgers fell 2-1 to reigning NCAA champion Santa Clara in the third round of the 2021 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
The Badgers and Broncos battled through a scoreless first-half. Santa Clara led 8-1 in shots and had two corner kick opportunities to the Badgers' zero. Goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer stopped all six shots on goal.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first, as Alex Loera scored off a corner kick to give SC a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute.
The tide started to turn in the 60th minute as Santa Clara's Emma Reeves was issued a red card after tripping up Joyelle Washington outside of the SC box.
Ten minutes later, UW capitalized on its player advantage as Emma Jaskaniec scored her team-leading ninth of the year off a feed from Natalie Viggiano to even things at 1-1.
Santa Clara reclaimed their lead in the 82nd minute with a goal from Karly Reeves in the top left of the net assisted by Sally Menti.
The Badgers were unable to even the score despite a tenacious effort in the final minutes. Santa Clara claimed the match 2-1 to advance to the elite eight of the NCAA tournament.
Santa Clara led the shot count 14-5 and corner kicks 6-4. Bloomer made one save in the second half to bring her final count to seven saves in the match.
The Badgers end their 2021 campaign with a record of 10-6-6, marking the 11th time under UW head coach Paula Wilkins that UW has had double-digit wins in a season.
