Wampler finishes passing play for 1-0 victory
MADISON, Wis. -- With just under four minutes to go in the match, sophomore Michael Wampler kicked in the game-winning goal for the Badgers Friday afternoon at McClimon Soccer Complex to earn a 1-0 victory over Ohio State.Â
Holding out for 86 defensive minutes, Wisconsin (1-5-1) matched Ohio State's (3-2-1) drive all the way.Â
Both teams attempted three shots on net in the first half.
Freshman Jack Finnegan, junior Henri Tophoven and junior Moritz Kappelsberger each took a piece of Buckeye senior goalkeeper Noah Lawrence, but the score remained nil-nil.
Despite their 8-0 corner-kick edge in the first as well, the Buckeyes could not find the back of the Badgers' net. OSU finished with 12-2 corners advantage. Â
With just a few minutes to go in the second half and overtime in sight, junior Noah Melick received a long pass down the right wing, raced towards the bottom of the goal box and found Wampler cutting through. The Cincinnati native finished for his first career goal.Â
Â
Also making an outstanding first career start, sophomore goalkeeper Carter Abbott recorded five saves on 11 shots faced for a clean sheet.Â
Up Next: The Badgers visit Penn State on Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m. CT.
