MADISON, Wis. – The 2021 U.S. National Team roster that will compete at next month's International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championships has a Wisconsin flair as seven Badgers were named to the squad on Tuesday morning.
Former Badgers Alex (Rigsby) Cavallini, Brianna Decker, Hilary Knight and
Abby Roque are joined by current Badgers
Natalie Buchbinder and
Britta Curl, as well as future Badger Caroline Harvey on the 25-player roster that will compete at next month's world championships in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia.
Cavallini, Decker and Knight, a trio that helped the U.S. win gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, all have experience competing at the world championships for the United States while Curl and Roque were named to last year's team before the 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to COVID.
Tuesday's news continues a great month for Buchbinder and Curl as the duo led UW to its sixth national championship on March 20.
The 2021 IIHF World Championships begin on May 6, with the gold medal game taking place on May 16. The U.S. has won the last five IIHF Women's World Championships and captured the top prize a total of nine times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), including eight of the last nine tournaments.
