MINNEAPOLIS — After winning the WCHA Final Faceoff semifinals against Minnesota, the No. 1/2 Wisconsin women's hockey team is headed to the WCHA Final Faceoff championship game where UW will face No. 3 Ohio State for the second-straight season.
Puck drop is at 2 p.m. and fans can watch the game live on FloHockey or listen to the game on Fox Sports 1070.
1. SEMIFINAL RECAP: The Badgers defeated the Golden Gophers 5-3 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship game.
Sophie Shirley scored to open the game,
Makenna Webster scored two goals and
Lacey Eden and
Britta Curl both lit the lamp once each.
2. FINAL FACEOFF FACTS: Wisconsin leads the league with eight WCHA Final Faceoff championships, all under head coach
Mark Johnson. The team has won four of the last six tournaments and is looking to increase their league-best with a ninth win. Last season, the Badgers defeated Minnesota Duluth 4-1 in the semifinals before falling 1-0 to OSU in the title game.
3. ROOKIE'S RACKING THEM UP: Freshmen
Lacey Eden and
Makenna Webster have been on a roll the past few weeks. Eden, recently named CHA Rookie of the Month, has 12 career points in just 11 games with the Badgers. Webster scored her ninth and 10th career points off two goals against Minnesota in the WCHA Final Faceoff semifinal game. Five of her last 10 points have come from the last five games and four of those are goals.
4. AGAINST OSU: UW split its series against OSU this year, going 2-2 against the Buckeyes.
Sophie Shirley has six goals and 10 assists in her previous 14 games against Ohio State while
Daryl Watts has 13 points in nine games against the Buckeyes.
5. SELECTION SUNDAY: The Badgers will find out their NCAA tournament fate on Sunday night as the NCAA will have its selection show at 8 p.m. Fans can watch the selection show live on NCAA.Com. UW looks to advance to its eighth-straight NCAA tournament.
