MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin women's soccer team earned a thrilling victory in shootout fashion over Northwestern in a Big Ten Conerence regional final on Sunday at McClimon Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats (6-6-1, 5-6-0 Big Ten) held a 1-0 lead at halftime courtesy Lily Gilbertson's goal in the 37th minute, but the Badgers were able to tie things up in the 58th minute with a goal from
Cameron Murtha.
NU and UW played a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team was able to finish the game in extra minutes.
In the shootout, goalkeeper
Jordyn Bloomer came up with two crucial saves, while
Emma Jaskaniec,
Sammy Kleedtke,
Claire Odmark and
Lauren Rice each scored to secure a 4-2 shootout victory for the Badgers (6-3-3, 6-3-2).
Notes to Know:
- The Badgers extended their unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2).
- Murtha scored her second goal of the year with both of her tallies coming in Madison.
- The Badgers are 4-1-1 in home games, including a 2-0-1 ledger at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
- Sunday was the first time UW had won a shootout since defeating Arizona State in penalty kicks, 4-3, in an NCAA tournament game on Nov. 13, 2009.
