Junior captain led Badgers to Big Ten title
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin defenseman and team captain Ty Emberson is now a professional hockey player. The junior signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes beginning this season, and will report to the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners.
A 2018 third-round pick, 73rd overall by Arizona in the 2018 draft, Emberson captained the Badgers to their first Big Ten regular-season title and first regular-season conference title since 2000. UW posted a 20-10-1 record, its best since the 2013-14 season, and earned a No. 1 seed for the NCAA tournament, its first since 2014.
"Ty had a strong three years here as a player and as a student and he is ready to start his pro hockey career," head coach Tony Granato said. "His leadership helped us get to our Big Ten championship and helped us make our return to the NCAA tournament. He will make Wisconsin proud, like he has since he's been here."
The Eau Claire native earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades after tallying four goals, nine assists and 13 points in 31 games this past season. He finished his Badger career with nine goals, 25 assists and 34 points in 101 games. He led the Badgers at plus-15 and ranked 13th in the nation with an average of 2.00 blocks per game in 2020-21.
A member of the 2021 Big Ten All-Tournament, Emberson is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
During his UW career, he was named 2020 Fenton Kelsey Jr./Mike Richter Most Competitive Award-winner, 2019 Dr. Joseph Coyne/Joe Pavelski Most Consistent and won the Ivan B. Williamson Scholastic Award for his achievements in the classroom. The teams 2021 awards have not yet been announced.
A product of the U.S. National Team Development Program, Emberson was also a top defenseman for Team USA at the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Czech Republic.
