Badgers Beat Boilermakers 5-0 in their return to Madison

Badgers take down Purdue in game 1 of the weekend series
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin softball team opened its final regular-season series with an impresssive 5-0 win over Purdue on Friday afternoon at Goodman Diamond.
The Badgers (18-19) earned their fifth home win of the year in their first home game in almost a month, scoring twice in the third and fifth innings while adding on an insurance run in the sixth.
The Boilermakers (15-26) threatened early by loading the bases in the top of the second-inning with two outs. The threat was short-lived as Maddie Schwartz got Kiara Dillon of Purdue to ground out for the final out of the inning.
After three scoreless innings, the Badgers got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. To start the third, Peyton Bannon and Fiona Girardot hit back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second. Megan Donahue then hit a line-drive single that drove in Bannon from second and allowed Girardot to advance to second. The next Badger hitter, Abby Herbst, singled to left, driving in Girardot from second and giving the Badgers a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Badgers added to their lead. Peyton Bannon led the inning off with a leadoff triple. Girardot then hit a double just out of the reach of the left fielder to score Bannon. Girardot advanced to third on a fielder's choice and then scored off of Alyssa McClelland's sacrifice bunt allowing the Badgers to take a 4-0 lead.
The Badgers added another run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Christaana Angelopulos singled for her second hit of the day, then advanced to third after a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. With two outs, Morgan Kummer pinch hit for Gabby Altobelli and hit an RBI single off the second base bag to give the Badgers a 5-0 lead.
The Badger offense was backed by a complete game shutout by Maddie Schwartz. She gave up zero runs and struck out five through seven innings.
Batting Cleanup
- With this win, the Badgers rise above .500 in their home games this season (5-4)
- Peyton Bannon was 4-for-4 on the day and scored two of the Badgers five runs.
- Maddie Schwartz conceded 0 walks in today's game, marking the second-straight game she hasn't allowed a walk.
