MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer is coming off arguably its most successful stretch since September 2018 as they are on a five game unbeaten streak, including wins against Butler, Marquette, Milwaukee, and Rutgers. Next up for the Badgers is the annual Pac the Mac/Alumni game where UW will face No. 8 Maryland at noon on Sunday. Here are five things to know before Wisconsin hits the pitch this weekend.
On A Roll – The Badgers are coming off a pair of 2-0 victories over Milwaukee and No. 12/21 Rutgers. This is the first time since October 2009 that UW has won 2-0 in back-to-back contests. In the matchup against the Panthers, Inaki Iribarren anchored the Wisconsin attack with two goals and against the Scarlet Knights, the Badgers continued the hot streak with goals from Zach Klancnik and Henri Tophoven to beat a ranked opponent for the third straight game.
Not A(Doe), A(Deer) – Freshman Adir Raphael got the start in both games over the week for UW and added two more clean sheets putting him 27th in the NCAA in shutouts.
Shutting Down Scoring Chances – Raphael and fellow keeper Carter Abbott have only allowed five goals on the year, which is good for 20th in NCAA DI and 1st in the conference. UW is 12th in the nation for goals against average at .507 and leads the Big Ten in that stat, as well.
Defensive Player of the Week – Senior defender Klancnik was recognized by the Big Ten conference on Tuesday as the Defensive Player of the Week. This is his first conference weekly honor. Last Tuesday, he assisted on one of Inaki Iribarren's goals against Milwaukee. The team captain also scored the game winning goal in Friday's upset victory over No. 12/21 Rutgers. The 42nd minute tally marked his fourth consecutive season with a score for the Badgers. All four have come against conference opponents with three game winning goals coming on the road. He also helped the Badger back line earn its fourth and fifth shutouts this season.
History With The Terrapins - Maryland leads the series 2-8-1 against Wisconsin. The last win for UW came on 9/21/18 in College Park when Klancnik headed in the golden goal in the 106th minute to take home the victory 2-1.
At the Pac the Mac/Alumni game, the first 500 fans will receive a free t-shirt. Admission is free and kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
