Wisconsin hosts Badger Classic at Zimmer Championship course
MADISON, Wis — The 29th-ranked Wisconsin women's cross country team begins its 2021 season by hosting the Badger Classic against DePaul on Friday at the Zimmer Cross Country Championship. The women's 6,000-meter race begins at 5 p.m. with the men's 8K race starting at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.Â

1. BADGERS ARE BACK! The Badgers begin their first full season since last year when their season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Friday's race marks the first of seven races Wisconsin is set to compete in and first of two races hosted by the Badgers with the second race being the highly anticipated Nuttycombe Invitational.
2. TOP RETURNEES: Wisconsin's top returnees include first-team All-Big Ten recipient, Brogan MacDougall, who finished seventh at the 2020 Big Ten Championship, and second-team All Big Ten honoree Lexi Westley, who finished in 12th place. Other top returnees this season include Alissa Niggemann, who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2019, Vivian Hacker, Sarah Schulze, and Victoria Heiligenthal.
3. RANKED AMONG THE BEST: The women begin the season with a sixth place standing in the Great Lakes Regional rankings and a 29th-place standing in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.
4. BIG MACK ATTACK: Head Coach Mackenzie Wartenberger begins her third season as head coach for the Badgers. Under her leadership, Wisconsin came in second place at the 2019 Big Ten Championships, and had the NCAA runnner-up in Alicia Monson in 2019.
5. UP NEXT: Following the Badger Classic, Wisconsin travels to Peoria, Illinois, for the Bradley Intercollegiate on Sept. 17. The women's race starts at 5:15 p.m. at Detweiler Park.
