No. 8 Badgers upend No. 17 Boilermakers at Mackey Arena

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — No. 8 Wisconsin closed out its weekend with a 23-12 victory on the road at No. 17 Purdue.

The Badgers improved to 8-1 overall this season and 4-1 in the Big Ten with dual match win at Mackey Arena.

Six Wisconsin wrestlers won their individual matches, led by true freshman Dean Hamiti with a 17-1 tech fall in 5:22 over Purdue's Hayden Lohrey at 165 pounds. Hamiti remains undefeated at 16-0 and has now 14 of those matches with bonus-point victories, including four tech falls and five pins.

No. 8 Eric Barnett opened up scoring at 125 pounds for the Badgers thanks to a 4-2 decision against No. 15 Devin Schroder. Teammate Joseph Zargo also earned his first victory in Wisconsin's Big Ten dual season with a 7-4 decision against No. 24 Parker Filius at 141 pounds.

No. 8 Austin Gomez also continues to impress after defeating Purdue's Alec White with a 14-5 major decision at 149 pounds. After nearly ending his wrestling career due to injury, Gomez has returned to the sport with force and holds a 12-1 overall record this season. He's also won six of those victories by bonus point.

In the upper weights, two Badger veterans returned to winning form against the Boilermakers. Redshirt seniors Chris Weiler (184) and Trent Hillger (285) both earned major decisions to help seal Wisconsin's dual victory. Weiler earned an upset win, 11-3, against Purdue's Max Lyon and Hillger shut out Michael Woulfe 10-0 to close the match.
