JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — No. 9 Wisconsin opened the season with a 2-1 record at the Battle in the River City on Saturday in Florida's 'First Coast.' The event was held at Jacksonville University in the hometown of Wisconsin head coach Chris Bono.

Led by Garrett Model's undefeated 3-0 performance on Saturday, the Badgers collected dominating wins against Chattanooga, 35-3, and Buffalo, 31-6. Wisconsin finished the event with a frustrating 26-6 loss to No. 14 Iowa State.

Model, a graduate student in his final year as a Badger, earned three individual victories in the three duals at 157 pounds. He defeated Chattanooga's Lincoln Heck 6-2, Buffalo's Nick Stampoulos 8-3 and Iowa State's Jason Kraisser 6-5. His victory against the Cyclones stood as one of the Badgers only two wins against ISU, joining true freshman James Rowley with a 4-3 decision against ISU's MJ Gaitan in his first collegiate victory.

Wisconsin's Austin Gomez kickstarted his season with two pins at 149 pounds during the Badgers' victories, leading the team in scoring 12 team points. Gomez first collected a fall against Chattanooga's Grant Lundy in 4:44 before picking off Buffalo's Kaleb Burgess in 2:24 during the second dual.

Among the bright spots for the weekend, Trent Hillger earned his 100th (and 101st) career victories as a Badger with his dual wins. Teammate Taylor LaMont also earned his first two victories as a Badger at 133 pounds after transferring from Utah Valley. The 2021 NCAA All-American won 2-0 over Chattanooga's Brayden Palmer and then later defeated Buffalo's Cole Minnick 6-1.
